Before anybody read further, I would like for you to goto AKK's entry first and I would like to add my take on this whole fiasco.
Like I said in the comments of AKK's entry, this is a classic debate of a Republican vs a Democrat. One side is the conservative "get-what-you-work-for" and the other asks for a safety net to take care of everybody.
I won't dwell into who is right and who is wrong as they can be no straight answer. Both Derek and Shu Min have their valid points.
However, what irked me was the attitude that Shu Min exhibited in her rebuttal to Derek's lament. Surely, it would have been better if she could have showed a little empathy, compassion and sensitivity. Her holier-than-thou stand on her pedestal just bugs me up my ass.
Guess what? This is exactly the type of people that will inherit the gahmen as the current PAP is already like that liao. Her dad is a current Member of Parliament.
Apples don't fall far from the tree.
Granted that you may argue that we ultimately have the power to stop such people from entering parliament by virtue of our votes, what is to stop them from coming in via the back door? Can you spell G-R-C?
This elitism situation is starting to spin out of control and I don't like a single bit of it. There is the danger of voting in the village idiot just to spite the arrogant candidate. But think about it, we would still be at the losing end replacing a bigot with an idiot.
Speaking of idiots and bigots, Shu Min is certainly not an idiot for after all, she hailed from RJC. As for bigot, sadly there is no escaping for her.
Four more years till the next election. Four more years before the next parade of bigots, new and incumbent.
I fear for our future. I really do.

I fear for our future in singapore too.
She is not even apologetic!
sunflower: Yah. I forgot to write about that in my blog. Thanks for
reminding.
Spinnee: I am very appalled at the magnitude of how these elites are
detached from the rest of us. It is sad that we are no longer ONE UNITED
PEOPLE as the line is drawn in the sand separating US vs THEM.
hey, this is fantastic... I can't believe she's so arrogant. no actually, I
can. But what worries me more, is the unrepentent manner in which she
blogs, with everything 'stupid' this and 'frigging' that. Is she not aware
that she's actually blogging about someone ELSE? and that someone else has
FEELINGS? It's the cold and calculated and frankly, very ignorant manner
that she writes in, that worries me. there's a big big difference between
naiveity and ignorance and unfortunately, she's demonstrated from her post
and her reply, that she is very much in the latter category.
4 year cycle...when the time comes again...we see usual stuff...all the
wayang , sprinkling of gold dust in the air, till the winners be declared
winners. Hibernate...wait for the next one....isn't it just like the World
Cup. :P
Akk: Well, Ms Wee too have quite a big chunk of education and more
in the immediate future. Looks like all that is wasted on her.
Aye... O well sucks to know all the scholarship stuff wasted on this kind
of ppl.. thanks for visiting my blog =)
If enough people fear for our future, then, and perhaps only then, can
there be change.
V_icks: Welcome to the blog. Funny how I was reading your blog when
at the very exact moment, you were reading mine! Pretty freaky eh?
Reminds me of the $60K peanut... But dun generalise too much. She's just
one of the few (or many) bad apples in a Lot of apples.
Aloe: Your peanut bring from JB one is it? People peanut is $600k,
yours is only $60k. Eh. Pirated peanut ah?
Leaping Toufu: No way Singapore is a free country. I can assure you
that many people will disagree with you on that.
Aloe: Hahaha..... I thought your peanut is cheong one. LOL
:D
Of course it's free...in the sense that everyone can lambast the
politicians and others over here in the net...
Leaping Toufu: It's free only if it is confined to cyberspace. Try
it anywhere else like print publication or broadsheet and you will find
yourself out of a job or worse, sued till you lose your pants.
did you hear the mr brown take on the way elites say sorry?? it's damn
farni - lucky I got my own office (is that elitism??!)...otherwise sure
kena sack for laughing on the job...hehe.
Pam: This girl bugged me on 3 levels. First it was the stuff that I
disagree even though I have to respect (albeit grudgingly) the fact that it
is her opinion. When the people voiced out their disagreement, she couldn't
counter any of the objections which in my opinion is conceding defeat.
