I Did Not Donate To Myanmar
Reuters (28 Jul 2008) - U.N. Admits "Significant" Myanmar Exchange Rate LossWithout even batting an eyelid, as much as USD 10 million is gone as a result of dubious exchange rates.
I am a person of humble resources. I want help but I can only help here or there but not everywhere. Hence, like many people, I have to make a decision to who I give my charity dollar.
It's not that I don't donate to say, NKF but rather that donation that I could have given to NKF is now being utilised somewhere else. Somewhere where I think for sure, that that my money can be put to better use.
How many of you are afraid of saying "No" straight in the face to the student carrying the donation tin during flag day? How many of you prefer to tactically maneuver such that the person in front of you screens the flag day student from you?
I used to do that in the past, to be honest.
Now, I just say it to them straight that I am committed elsewhere. They may go further to say that it won't hurt to just drop an additional 20 cents into the tin, to which I would retort that even with the extra 20 cents, it would still go into the tin of my choice.
Coming back to the USD 10 million dollar loss.
How would you feel, if I tell you that there is a possibility that your $100 donation is among the USD 10 million that never made it to the light of day?
You can buy a SHITLOAD of rice, medicine, water, milk with USD 10 million and feed a lot of people for quite some time.
How would you feel if I tell you that there is a possibility that none of your $100 donation bought anything mentioned above coz it vapourised the moment it left your hands?
How would you feel if I tell you that YES, the victims did receive tents, milk, rice, water, medicine but that there is a possibility that your $100 donation played no part in it.
Sorry Myanmar, I am committed elsewhere.

msvindicta & ruok: I just hate it when other people give you THE
look when you refuse. Like isn't this supposed to be on a voluntary basis
i.e. anyone is entitled to say no without repercussion?
I have not donated a single cent to Myanmar, simply because I did not
believe the money would reach the people at all. If anyone would want to
judge based on their self-righteous judgmental perception/principles, go
ahead.
I am helping the community cats of Singapore by being deeply involved with
the Cat Welfare Society. Can you donate pls?
Posh: I guess you are right in the sense that we are not answerable
to anyone as far as making our own charitable decision is concerned.
Barffie: Thanks but no thanks. I think feeding and educating needy
kids are at the top of my priority above stray cats. Sorry.
Money in my pocket is better in tin donation cans.. Sad..

sure.
THB: I disagree with the old saying of giving till it hurts. Give
whatever's comfortable with you. If you don't feel like giving, it is your
choice that must be respected and not judged.
Barffie: I am not but I do want you to think about weighing needy
kids vs stray cats i.e. who should you be helping. OK, now I'm really
messing with ya.
